When most kids hear the word SURRENDER, they think of it as a military term which refers to ceasing resistance to an enemy or opponent.  One side waves a white flag showing they are submitting to the winner of the battle.  However, in a spiritual sense, we are always in a battle between our human will and the will of God.  (Romans 8:20-22; Romans 5:12)  Think of a two year old who wants a cookie, but mom says no.  What happens next?  No one taught the two year old how to throw a temper tantrum, but she will do it because human beings are selfish and self-centered at the core.  Young children have to learn to submit to their parents.  Submitting to parents pleases God.

When was a time it was difficult for you to submit to your parents?

As children get older, they make choices on how they will behave.  They must CHOOSE to follow their sinful nature OR follow God’s will in their lives.  (Joshua 24:15).  TRUST is a big part in surrendering your life to God.  We trust that God’s plan for our lives will always benefit us (Jeremiah 29:11), unlike our own plans which often lead to self-destruction (Proverbs 14:12).

Can you think of a time when you did what YOU wanted to do even though you knew it wasn’t really the right thing to do, a time when you chose to go against God’s will?

How do you surrender to God in your everyday life?  When it comes to school work or obeying your parents, it can be hard to visualize what it means to surrender these things to God.  Think of it this way, when you’re deciding what to do in any given situation: You must CHOOSE to allow God to take the lead on what happens.  So study for that test, listen to your parents and respect them, but in the end, TRUST God with the results of those efforts.  Proverbs 16:9 says, “The heart of a man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

 As you get older, you will want to plan exactly what your life ahead will look like.  God may have different plans than yours.  His plans are better than anything we dream for ourselves.  Don’t be discouraged when it looks like plans aren’t working the way you want.

Surrendering your life means:

·       Following God's lead without knowing where he's sending you;

·       Waiting for God's timing without knowing when it will come;

·       Expecting a miracle without knowing how God will provide;

·       Trusting God's purpose without understanding the circumstances.

Parents, share an example from the list above about how you surrendered to God.

God loves and honors a life that is surrendered to Him, and He rewards that life with the greatest fulfillment you could ever imagine (Luke 6:22-23). What are the areas in your life that you have turned over to God?  Ask God to show you areas you need to surrender to Him.

As a family, listen to the song I Surrender All

All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.

I surrender all,
I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Humbly at His feet I bow;
Worldly pleasures all forsaken,
Take me, Jesus, take me now.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Make me, Savior, wholly Thine;
Let me feel the Holy Spirit,
Truly know that Thou art mine.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power,
Let Thy blessing fall on me.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Now I feel the sacred flame;
Oh, the joy of full salvation!
Glory, glory, to His Name!
