13 Reasons Why: Approach with Caution

There is a lot of acclaim and controversy about the Netflix show “13 Reasons Why”. We have received emails from school districts, people have contacted us about it, and there are a lot of questions surrounding the show. Let me start by saying that the content is very mature in nature, and it should not be treated lightly. My goal is not to tell you what you should or should not let your student watch, nor am I suggesting that you do watch the show. What I am recommending is that you do some research on the show before you make a decision. And more importantly, have a conversation with you student about it. I have included a link to resource that will help you with some questions and talking points.

I want to make sure that viewers, the majority of who are teens, are not watching this show and perceiving that suicide is being glorified as an attractive or reasonable option to handle problems. I never want anyone to think about, much less consider, suicide as a solution to a very painful life. While I know that in reality it does happen, I pray the students that we interact with will experience Jesus in a way that will overflow them with peace, love, and joy. My goal is that they would know they are never alone and that they have someone they can always turn to so that death is never a way out.

So please, take some time with your kids. Sit down and see what they are watching. We all could be a little more involved in what our kids view, myself included. We love you guys. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions!
